Competitive Activities

During the association’s history, whitewater rafting competitions have been held at both Finnish Championship (SM) level and in recreational divisions. The competitions featured separate categories for men and women. In addition, SuMeKo ry organized the Rafting Finland Cup competition series from 2009 to 2016, with 4–6 events per season depending on the year. Competitions were held across Finland in Kiiminki, Kuusamo, Laukaa, Muonio, Tornio, and Rovaniemi. At its peak, individual events attracted more than 20 teams. The Rafting Finland Cup series has been on hiatus since 2017.

Finnish men’s and women’s national rafting teams, as well as club teams, have represented Finland in World Championships, European Championships, and Euro Cup competitions in the R4 and R6 categories, including events held in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Netherlands, Costa Rica, and Norway. SuMeKo ry organized Rafting Euro Cup competitions in Rovaniemi and Tornio between 2011 and 2013.

The Rafting Finland development project, established to support the internationalization of whitewater rafting and the development of competitive activities, refurbished an international-standard whitewater slalom course at Vikaköngäs on the Raudanjoki River in Rovaniemi. The course enables the organization of international whitewater rafting competitions in Finland and can also be used for training, practice, and commercial activity programs. After the rental period ended, management of the course was transferred to Rovaniemen Melojat ry.

At present, competitive whitewater rafting activity in Finland is not active. No competitions have been organized in the competitive divisions since 2016, and recreational division competitions have been held only sporadically, with a few exceptions.
